NOLA's Superdome: From Devastation to Recovery

As I was telling my dad about 11.027 and what's in store for this semester, he was reminded of this video from CBS news. It aired just a few hours before the Super Bowl, showing how important the Superdome is to the city and what it represents.

The report was made before the game--and thus before the blackout of half the stadium--but I still think it makes an interesting point; that buildings and structures are often much more than just a physical part of the landscape. They become part of the culture and can often act as symbols of the city and the community.

  1. Great to hear you're sharing this class with your family! Yes, the superdome is definitely assciated with both positive and negative images of New Orleans. After all, it's the home of the Saints - NOLA's football team that has really contributed to the economy and whose Superbowl Win was such an uplifting turning point in the city's morale. However, as you saw in the Katrina documentary we watched in class, the Superdome also is a place that represents the very worst that can happen when a city is going through a crisis. Continue to look at all buildings, not just major landmarks, as clues about the building's surrounding community.
